Sidley badgeSidley United were founder members of Division Two of the Sussex County League in 1952, and, after twice finishing as runners-up, won promotion at the end of the 1958/59 season as champions.

After five seasons Sidley suffered relegation but bounced back immediately as Division Two champions in 1965, and finished as runners-up in Division One the following two seasons. Between 1965-1987 the club alternated between the two divisions, with their best finishes two runners-up places in Division Two in 1972 and 1978; as well as a 4th place in Division One in 1974.

In 1987/88 Sidley were relegated into intermediate football after finishing bottom of Division Two, and narrowly avoided dropping out of the League altogether the following season, when they finished one place off the bottom of Division Three. The club however, recovered to finish 4th in 1988/89 and won promotion back to Division Two as runners-up to runaway winners Wigmore Athletic (now Worthing United) in 1989/90.

After a shaky start when they again just avoided relegation, Sidley remained in Division Two for nine seasons (winning the Division 2 League Cup in 1996/97) until gaining promotion back to Division One in 1999 as champions.

In 1999/00 the Blues finished in sixth place and were the only side to beat champions Langney Sports (now Eastbourne Borough) all season. 2000/01 saw the club’s best ever season, as they lifted the Division One championship for the first time, finishing five points ahead of Burgess Hill Town, and completed a League-Cup double by adding the John O'Hara League Challenge Cup.

Sidley finished 5th in 2001/02, but the last few seasons have produced only mid to lower table positions as the club has struggled to revive its fortunes, although 2006/07 saw the club reach the Final of the League Challenge Cup where they runners-up to Crowborough Athletic.

Description of ground
Sidley are one of a number of clubs in Sussex that ground-share with the local cricket club, and as consequence Gullivers - named after the farmer that donated the ground as long it was only used for sporting activity - is essentially a three-sided ground, with the stand (and more importantly, shelter) some way from the large clubhouse, just inside the main entrance.

Cover is provided from a small stand situated on the far touchline, with the dugouts incorporated into the structure. As can be seen from Bob Lilliman's photographs, it has changed very little in the past 30 or so years. There are no seats, only a couple of steps of terracing.

The pitch is of particular note, as it slopes sharply upwards towards the far corner, looking from the stand.
